Simon Armitage

Another great blog by a pupil of Richmond School and Sixth Form College

His feats span far and wide - from succeeding Carol Ann Duffy in the role of Poet Laureate to physically making his mark (his work has been carved large - in the rock of the Stanza Stone Trail, as well as small - onto a cancer treatment pill). His recognition is of a royal standard - literally!

His masterful wordsmanship makes it an immense privilege for Richmond to be an audience to the delivery of his expertly crafted works. Both the most avid poetry enthusiasts and the newest to the field of verse can unite under a shared enjoyment of his brilliant and clever hand.

His Yorkshire origin is identifiable in his quintessentially Northern wit and charm which is evident in his works, Armitage will be playing on home turf when he takes to the stage of the Georgian Theatre Royal on the 15th of October, for ‘An Evening of Poetry’. He will bring to life his eclectic, poignant work as part of an encore event in the Richmond Walking and Book Festival. His time at the Georgian will also coincide with the celebrations taking place for Richmond’s 950th, making this an especially exceptional occasion.

Armitage boasts the feat of being author to countless collections of poetry, many of which were recipients to both awards and critical acclaim. This impressive repertoire provides for an engaging set, taking his renowned poetry to a whole new level by hearing it delivered by none other than the poet himself.
