W25: Follow in the Footsteps of Simon Armitage - A Linear Walk from Keld to Hawes - new
Leave Station car park 9.00am. We will transfer to Keld and return to Richmond by private bus. The charge for the bus is included in the ticket price. 12.5 miles. Hard. £15
In 2010 Simon Armitage walked the Pennine Way and wrote about it in “Walking Home”. On route he diverted by car from Keld to Richmond where he gave a reading at the Georgian Theatre Royal. The following day he returned to Keld and walked to Hawes. Simon will be speaking again in the Georgian Theatre Royal as part of our Festival and this walk will recreate his journey the following day (although unfortunately without Simon). We will follow the Pennine Way over Great Shunner Fell at 2,349 ft where in the words of the Poet Laureate “Broad moorland ranges extend one way, punctuated by distinct and isolated prominences, with the more dramatic, clustered and unmistakeable presence of the Lake District forming a serrated horizon to the west”.
Please note we will be walking at a reasonably fast pace and expect to return to Richmond around 6pm. Please bring sufficient refreshments for the day.
